Overview of Hopi Ear Candling

Hopi Ear Candling, also known as thermal-auricular therapy, is an ancient practice used to promote ear health and overall well-being, it is a pleasant and non-evasive healing treatment of the ears. A natural ear cleansing technique, that is a simple and safe method of removing excess wax, infections and residuals of past ear infections. The treatment is relaxing and soothing which can offer relief to any problems in the ear, nose and throat areas. It also calms the mind to combat stress and deeply relaxes all of your senses.

The ear candle induces a revitalising heat upon the head and ears, which soothes, and relaxes.

This ancient therapeutic art may have been developed with the domestication of the honeybee. Beeswax was - and still is - a key component to making the hollow cylinders used in the procedure. The principal cloth used by ancient Egyptians was linen made from flax (the fibres of an annual blue-flowered plant).

The candles work using the process of convection. The burning of the candle helps to draw softer waxes and toxins from the ear. Some of these are then oxidised or turned into vapours and burnt. The warm air from the burning candle passes into the ear canal before being gently drawn back up to the top of the candle in a chimney effect. The warm air containing the herbal extract vapours from the candle helps to soothe and invigorate the ear.

The Hopi Ear Candles course covers how to give a full ear candle treatment and covers the history, technique and aftercare of the treatment. The course also covers anatomy and physiology of the ear, how the ear works, consultation, and contra-indications to treatment.

After the treatment, the therapist may perform a gentle ear massage and lymphatic drainage facial massage to further promote relaxation and stimulate circulation in the ear area.
